A capabilities deck can cost nothing but your time—or well over $10,000.

That range sounds ridiculous until you realize that people use the phrase “capabilities deck design” to describe completely different kinds of work.

One provider may be taking finished copy and making the slides look cleaner. Another may be helping you decide what your agency should say, which work actually proves it, how to structure the story and how to turn all of that into a deck your team can confidently use in a real pitch.

Those are not the same deliverable.

The most useful question is not simply, “How much should a capabilities deck cost?” It is: How much of the thinking, writing, positioning and design do you need someone else to do?

Quick comparison

Capabilities deck pricing at a glance

Option Typical investment Best for What you are really buying
DIY $0–$100+ Early-stage agencies and capable internal teams Tools, templates and your own time
AI or template-assisted DIY $0–$300+ Creating a fast first version Speed and structure, with editing still required
Marketplace freelancer $300–$2,500+ A deck whose story and copy are already strong Primarily slide production and visual cleanup
Senior presentation specialist $2,500–$7,500+ Higher-stakes custom design Experienced design judgment and collaboration
Presentation or branding agency $5,000–$15,000+ Complex scopes and multiple stakeholders A broader team and comprehensive engagement
Soblu Capabilities Deck ReCraft $5,000 Agencies needing positioning, content and design together An end-to-end capabilities deck transformation

These are planning ranges, not universal price cards. Slide count, urgency, animation, custom illustration, copywriting, stakeholder reviews and revision rounds can all change the final quote.

Option 1

Build your capabilities deck yourself

Typical cost: $0–$100+, plus your time

DIY is a legitimate option—especially if you are still refining your services, do not pitch frequently or simply do not have the budget to outsource the work yet.

You can create a deck in PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, Canva or Pitch. You may already have access to one of those platforms, which means your direct cost can be close to zero.

But “free” does not mean effortless. The real DIY cost is the time required to clarify your positioning, choose the right proof, write the copy, find the assets, build the slides, get useful feedback and actually finish.

Best fit: You have more available time than budget and are willing to make the strategic decisions yourself.

Watch out for: Starting with visual design before the positioning and story are clear. A polished version of a generic pitch is still a generic pitch.

Option 2

Use a template or AI deck builder

Typical cost: $0–$300+

Templates and AI presentation tools can make the first draft much faster. They are useful for establishing a basic structure, exploring visual directions and getting past the intimidation of a blank file.

They can also create a false sense of completion.

AI can organize the information you give it. It cannot automatically know which services should lead, what buyers misunderstand, why a prospect should choose you, which project proves your positioning, or what your team says in a pitch that never made it into the deck.

Best fit: You need a working first draft quickly and already have clear messaging, strong proof and good editorial judgment.

Watch out for: Generic AI copy and spending hours forcing your story into a structure that was never designed for your business.

Option 3

Hire a freelancer through Fiverr or Upwork

Typical cost: $300–$2,500+

Freelance marketplaces can be a smart route when your deck’s structure and copy are settled and you mainly need someone to improve the visual execution.

At the lower end, the engagement is usually production-focused: you provide the words, slide order, brand guidelines and assets. The freelancer turns those materials into designed slides. Higher prices may include more custom design, data visualization, revisions and creative direction.

Before hiring, ask:

  • Is this design only, or does it include copy and story development?
  • Will the designer challenge the structure, or reproduce it as supplied?
  • How many slides and revision rounds are included?
  • Are charts, diagrams, image sourcing or custom graphics extra?
  • Will I receive fully editable working files?
  • Have they created agency capabilities decks—not only startup fundraising decks?

Best fit: You can hand over a clear, well-written deck and give precise creative feedback.

Watch out for: Assuming “pitch deck design” includes strategic positioning or copywriting.

Option 4

Hire a senior freelance presentation specialist

Typical cost: $2,500–$7,500+

A senior specialist generally brings more than slide-production skill. They may help refine the narrative, identify gaps, simplify the copy, recommend a stronger sequence and develop a visual system tailored to your brand.

This level makes sense when the pitch is important enough that you want an experienced partner, but you do not need the broader process or team of a full-service agency.

Best fit: Your agency has strong raw material and a decision-maker who can stay closely involved.

Watch out for: Hourly projects where the copy is still changing. If the strategic foundation is unsettled, revision time can grow quickly.

Option 5

Hire a presentation, branding or pitch deck agency

Typical cost: $5,000–$15,000+, with complex engagements going higher

An agency engagement may include strategists, writers, designers, creative directors and project managers. That can be useful for complicated decks, multiple stakeholders, compressed deadlines or organizations that need help from discovery through final delivery.

But the word agency does not guarantee positioning is included. Some presentation agencies specialize in visual execution. A branding agency may treat the deck as one piece of a larger engagement. A pitch deck agency may specialize in fundraising rather than the way a service business sells its capabilities.

Ask what happens before design begins. If the answer is essentially “send us your copy,” you are buying high-level visual execution—not a full positioning and messaging process.

Best fit: The deck is high stakes, multiple people need to contribute and you want a structured team to own most of the work.

Watch out for: Paying for an impressive-looking deck that still fails to make the buying decision clearer.

Option 6

Work with Soblu on a full Capabilities Deck ReCraft

Investment: $5,000

Soblu’s Capabilities Deck ReCraft is for agencies that do not simply need prettier slides.

It is for the agency owner who knows the business is stronger than the current deck makes it look—but may be too close to the business to clearly explain why.

1. Positioning

We uncover what your agency does best, who it is best for and what makes it meaningfully different.

2. Content + messaging

We turn that positioning into a clear structure and persuasive copy organized around what the buyer needs to understand.

3. High-impact design

We give the story an upgraded, modern design with the wow factor to match the quality of your agency.

The result is not positioning with design added later, or design placed on top of generic messaging. The positioning, content and design are developed to work together.

The ReCraft includes:

  • Strategy and outline development
  • Positioning refinement
  • Copy and messaging
  • Complete deck design
  • Editable working files
  • Weekly accountability and real-time feedback
  • 90 days of support as the deck is refined and used in real pitches

Best fit: You pitch several prospects each month, want to win higher-value work and need an expert partner to bring positioning, message and design together.

What actually drives the cost?

Two 20-slide decks can have completely different prices because slide count is only one part of the job.

Your starting point

Final copy and proof lower the scope. Discovery, positioning and content development increase it.

Design vs. differentiation

Design improves clarity and impact. Positioning gives the buyer a meaningful reason to choose you. Strong decks need both.

Stakeholders

Every additional decision-maker creates more feedback, reconciliation and revision time.

Custom execution

Diagrams, data visualization, illustration, animation, image research and complex case studies add scope.

Speed

Rush timelines frequently cost more and leave less room for thoughtful discovery and iteration.

Ongoing support

Clarify whether feedback, editable files, templates, updates and post-delivery support are included.

How to choose the right option

Choose DIY or the free Capabilities Deck Lab online community if budget is your biggest constraint, you have time to do the work and you want to learn the process.

Choose a template or AI tool if you need a fast first draft, your messaging is already clear and someone can recognize and remove generic content.

Choose a Fiverr or Upwork freelancer if your copy and structure are finished and your main need is visual improvement.

Choose a senior specialist or presentation agency if the deck is high stakes and you need highly custom visual or narrative support.

Choose Soblu’s ReCraft if your current deck does not reflect the quality of your agency, your positioning is difficult to explain, or you want one integrated process for positioning, content and high-impact design.

The cheapest deck is not always the least expensive option

A $500 redesign can be a great investment when the story underneath it is already strong. It can be an expensive detour when the real problem is that the deck sounds like every other agency.

The goal is not to buy the most expensive deck. It is to stop paying for the wrong layer of help.

If your story is clear, hire for design. If the story is not clear, solve the positioning before polishing the slides. If you need both, choose a process where strategy, content and design are built together.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a capabilities deck cost?

A capabilities deck can cost from $0 for a fully DIY version to $15,000 or more for an end-to-end agency engagement. Marketplace freelancers commonly cost hundreds to a few thousand dollars, while strategy, copywriting and custom design move the project into a higher range.

Why do capabilities deck prices vary so much?

The biggest difference is scope. Some providers only design finished slides. Others help develop the positioning, narrative, copy, case studies and visual system. Slide count, complexity, turnaround, revisions and stakeholder involvement also affect price.

Can I create a capabilities deck myself?

Yes. DIY can work well if you have time, clear positioning, strong proof and basic writing and design skills. Soblu’s free Capabilities Deck Lab online community provides guidance for agency owners building their own decks.

Is Fiverr or Upwork a good place to hire a designer?

It can be, particularly when your content and structure are finished and you mainly need visual design. Confirm whether strategy or copywriting is included, how many revisions are allowed and whether editable files are included.

How long does a capabilities deck take?

A simple redesign may take days or a few weeks. A strategic engagement can take several weeks and include continued refinement after the first version. Soblu’s current ReCraft process includes weekly guidance and 90 days of support.

What is included in Soblu’s $5,000 ReCraft?

Strategy and outline development, positioning refinement, copy and messaging, complete deck design, editable working files, weekly accountability and 90 days of continued support.
